XBreaky, a breakout clone

## NAME

xbreaky - XBreaky, a breakout clone

## SYNOPSIS

**xbreaky** \[-nosound\] \[-size \<1\|2\|3\|4\>\] \[-nograb\] \[-h\|-help\]

## DESCRIPTION

This manual page briefly documents **xbreaky** , a version of the old Breakout/Arkanoid game, written for the X Window system.

The objective of this arcade game is to break all the bricks with a ball that bounces off the walls and a paddle that you can move. You start by firing out the ball from your paddle, which can be moved left and right parallel to the wall below it. The ball will move and hit the bricks located above, and when it hits a brick it will fall apart (i.e. dissappear), but the ball will bounce back to hit other bricks, sidewalls or the highest wall. If it falls down not hitting the paddle, you lose one life and have to start over.

There are several types of bricks that the ball can hit, besides the normal ones. You'll have to hit some bricks two times to actually make them dissapear, and some you won't even be able to destroy. Several of them can drop a colored ball when they get hit. If a brick drops a green ball, and you move the paddle to catch it, you can get one of the following extra qualities:

*warpin:* you get a free advance to the next level\
*solid:* your ball will destroy every block in its path\
*shootin:* your paddle gets to fire bullets (by clicking the mouse button) at bricks.\
*extraball:* you get to play with another ball\
*tall:* the paddle enlarges in width\
 *score2x:* the score is doubled.

The orange balls can be a mixed blessing, for example:

*shaky:* the ball makes rapid uncontrolled turns while moving\
 *slow:* the ball slows down\
*sticky:* when the ball touches the paddle, it stops, and you have to fire it out again, each time\
*dummy:* the field is closed, the ball can't be lost

The red balls are the dangerous ones, because they cause the following:

*fast:* the ball gains speed\
 *balls-1:* a ball dissapears\
*crazy:* the paddle's movement is reversed\
 *small:* the paddle shrinks

The status of the ball and the beam (paddle) is displayed on the right side of the Xbreaky screen, along with the game name, version, status, highscores, level, score, blocks and balls remaining, and author name.\
You finish a game level once you manage to destroy all the visible bricks. The game normally ends once you drop the ball five times or when the ESC key is pressed. The P Key pauses the game. The normal score is two points per destroyed brick. If you make a high score, the game asks you for your name and records the information.
