NAME

upgrade_ldap_backend - a tool to upgrade debian-edu's ldap backend to be usable with webmin-ldap-user-simpel

SYNOPSIS

upgrade_ldap_backend [-n|--no-add-auth-groups]

DESCRIPTION

This manual page documents briefly the upgrade_ldap_backend command. It was written for the Debian distribution because lintian complained untill it existed.

upgrade_ldap_backend stops the ldap server, dumps the data to a file, parses the file, fixes syntax errors, creates additional elements and attibutes, rewrites some elements, writes the newly formatted data to a file (in ldif format), feeds that file to slapadd, which creates a new database and finally starts the ldap server again.

While doing its work it is very careful to not lose any data. It creates backups of the data files during the different steps of the migration process. These backups are located in /var/backups/ldap/Webmin-Ldap-Upgrade-<DATE>-<TIME>.

One can restore previous versions of the ldap database from the backups created by upgrade_ldap_backend by doing:

/etc/init.d/slapd stop # This stops the ldap server

rm -rf /var/lib/ldap/* # This wipes out the present ldap database

slapadd -v -l /var/backups/ldap/Webmin-Ldap-Upgrade-2004-04-14-20-16-10/slapd-dc=skole,dc=skolelinux,dc=no-slapcat.ldif # This recreates the ldap database from the automatically generated dump

/etc/init.d/slapd start # This starts the ldap server again.

OPTIONS

This program takes only one command line switch (available as a long and short version).

-n, --no-add-auth-groups

If no authority groups exist yet, dont create them..br Otherwise, by default, the standard authority groups for students (groupname: students), teachers (groupname: teachers), junior administrators (groupname: jradmins) and administrators (admins) are created.

FILES

The backup files are stored in /var/backups/ldap/Webmin-Ldap-Upgrade/. The processed one ends in .fixed.
