# trick-chroot(1)

## NAME

trick-chroot

## SYNOPSIS

**trick-chroot** \[ --libpath directory \] rootdir \[ command \]

**trick-chroot** implements \`chroot' functionality in userland. It can also be used by non-root users.

## DESCRIPTION

By setting the VPATH environment variable appropiratly, and setting LD\_PRELOAD to **[libtricks(1)](/libtricks/1.md)** the mentioned library will create an environment where the root directory will seem to be that of the first argument

**trick-chroot** provides a lot less security than the real (kernel) chroot, but please note that root can easily break out of a real chroot shell too. Neigther this trick-chroot nor the real chroot should be considered \`safe'.

The main purpose of this script is to show an example of how to work with **[libtricks(1)](/libtricks/1.md) .**

Note btw that, as the dynamic linker (/lib/ld.so-linux) is statically linked, it will search the libraries in the real root, not in this chroot environment. So, you don't have to populate ${CHROOT}/lib.

### OPTIONS

- *--libpath path*

specify the path of the libtrick library. Default: /usr/lib/libtricks/

## BUGS

Upon startup, \`pwd' still shows the real dir, not relative to the new root dir. However, the first cd will correct this.

## COPYING

**libtricks** is distributed under the GNU General Public License. (GPL 2.0 or greater).
