# tag(5)

Generic tagged file format

## NAME

tag - Generic tagged file format

## SYNOPSIS

*filename***.tag**

## DESCRIPTION

The **.tag** format is a generic catchall for many types of data which can be described as a series of tags.

## FORMAT

Tagged files consist of a number of records, each record being composed of a set of data items, which are labeled with a tag.

There is one reserved tag name, which is 'End', which is always the last tag in a record.

All **.tag** files start with a header record, the first line of which identifies the type of tag file. It is always of the form Tag- *something* -version: *versionnumber*

The rest of the header record can be any other tags as required.

## BUGS

This manpage is still very sketchy.

The format is intentionally less complex than, for example, SGML - this is also a feature.
