# sd\_bus\_interface\_name\_is\_valid(3)

Check if a string is a valid bus name or object path

## NAME

sd\_bus\_interface\_name\_is\_valid, sd\_bus\_service\_name\_is\_valid, sd\_bus\_member\_name\_is\_valid, sd\_bus\_object\_path\_is\_valid - Check if a string is a valid bus name or object path

## SYNOPSIS

```
#include <systemd/sd-bus.h>
```

**int sd\_bus\_interface\_name\_is\_valid(const char\*** *p***);**

**int sd\_bus\_service\_name\_is\_valid(const char\*** *p***);**

**int sd\_bus\_member\_name\_is\_valid(const char\*** *p***);**

**int sd\_bus\_object\_path\_is\_valid(const char\*** *p***);**

## DESCRIPTION

**sd\_bus\_interface\_name\_is\_valid()** checks if a given string *p* is a syntactically valid bus interface name. Similarly, **sd\_bus\_service\_name\_is\_valid()** checks if the argument is a valid bus service name, **sd\_bus\_member\_name\_is\_valid()** checks if the argument is a valid bus interface member name, and **sd\_bus\_object\_path\_is\_valid()** checks if the argument is a valid bus object path. Those functions generally check that only allowed characters are used and that the length of the string is within limits.

## RETURN VALUE

Those functions return 1 if the argument is a valid interface / service / member name or object path, and 0 if it is not. If the argument is **NULL**, an error is returned.

### Errors

Returned errors may indicate the following problems:

**-EINVAL**

The *p* parameter is **NULL**.

## NOTES

Functions described here are available as a shared library, which can be compiled against and linked to with the **libsystemd** [**pkg-config**(1)](/pkg-config/1.md) file.

All functions listed here are thread-agnostic and only a single thread may operate on a given object at any given time. Different threads may access the same object at different times. Multiple independent objects may be used from different threads in parallel.

The code described here uses [**getenv**(3)](/getenv/3.md), which is declared to be not multi-thread-safe. This means that the code calling the functions described here must not call [**setenv**(3)](/setenv/3.md) from a parallel thread. It is recommended to only do calls to **setenv()** from an early phase of the program when no other threads have been started.

## HISTORY

**sd\_bus\_interface\_name\_is\_valid()**, **sd\_bus\_service\_name\_is\_valid()**, **sd\_bus\_member\_name\_is\_valid()**, and **sd\_bus\_object\_path\_is\_valid()** were added in version 246.
