# normalize(3clc)

Normal vector length 1.

## NAME

normalize - Normal vector length 1.

##

**floatn normalize(floatn** *p***);**

**doublen normalize(doublen** *p***);**

###

| |
| --- |
| **gentype** **normalize** (**gentype** *p*) // if half extension enabled |

## DESCRIPTION

Returns a vector in the same direction as *p* but with a length of 1.

## NOTES

Built-in geometric functions operate component-wise. The description is per-component. **float***n* is **float**, **float2**, **float3**, or **float4** and **double***n* is **double**, **double2**, **double3**, or **double4**. The built-in geometric functions are implemented using the round to nearest even rounding mode.

The geometric functions can be implemented using contractions such as [**mad**(3clc)](/mad/3clc.md) or [**fma**(3clc)](/fma/3clc.md).

If extended with [**cl\_khr\_fp16**(3clc)](/cl_khr_fp16/3clc.md), generic type name **gentype** may indicate **half** and **half{2\|3\|4}** as arguments and return values.
