## NAME

**htpasswd** - manipulate password files for the Apache server

## SYNOPSYS

**htpasswd** \[ **-c** \] *passwordfile* *username*

## DESCRIPTION

**htpasswd** creates or changes password entries for a given *username* in an Apache *passwordfile*. The names and passwords stored in this file can then be used for authentication when accessing protected areas of a Web server tree.

## OPTIONS

- **-c**

  Creates a new *passwordfile*.
