# e2fsadm(8)

ext2 Filesystem / LVM administration

## NAME

e2fsadm - ext2 Filesystem / LVM administration

## SYNOPSIS

**e2fsadm** \[-d\] \[-h/?\] { -l \[+/-\]LogicalExtentsNumber \| -L \[+/-\]LogicalVolumeSize\[kKmMgGtT\]} \[-n\] \[-v\] LogicalVolumePath

## DESCRIPTION

e2fsadm allows resizing of a logical volume (see [lvm(8)](/lvm/8.md), [lvcreate(8)](/lvcreate/8.md)) containing an unmounted ext2 filesystem and then extending the filesystem by [ext2resize(8)](/ext2resize/8.md) afterwards or reducing the filesystem first and then reducing the logical volume afterwards.

### OPTIONS

- *-d*

  Enables additional debugging output (if compiled with DEBUG).

- *-h/?*

  Print a usage message on standard output and exit successfully.

- *-l \[+/-\]LogicalExtentsNumber*

  Resize the filesystem/logical volume to the number of logical extents relative (with +/-) to the old size or absolute without it.

- *-L \[+/-\]LogicalVolumeSize\[kKmMgGtT\]*

  Resize the filesystem/logical volume to the number of megabytes relative (with +/-) to the old size or absolute without it. A size suffix of k for kilobyte, m for megabyte, g for gigabyte or t for terabyte is optional.

- *-n*

  Avoid the filesystem check before the resize operation. A filesystem check is mandatory before [ext2resize(8)](/ext2resize/8.md). Usefull, if a check has been done before starting e2fsadm.

- *-v*

  Gives verbose runtime information about e2fsadm's activities.

## DIAGNOSTICS

e2fsadm uses [e2fsck(8)](/e2fsck/8.md), [lvextend(8)](/lvextend/8.md), [lvreduce(8)](/lvreduce/8.md) and [ext2resize(8)](/ext2resize/8.md) internal. It returns an exit state of 0 for success or \> 0 for error:

```
1  the filesystem size is invalid
2  the logical volume name is missing
3  the logical volume name is invalid
4  the logical volume doesn't exist
5  an error occured while reading the VGDA
6  an error occured while resizing the filesystem
7  /proc/mounts is not existing
8  the filesystem is mounted
9  the filesystem type is not ext2
10 the e2fsck(8) command is missong or was not found
99 invalid command line
```

## ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES

- **E2FSADM\_RESIZE\_CMD**

  Command to call instead of [ext2resize(8)](/ext2resize/8.md). You might set it to eg [resize2fs(8)](/resize2fs/8.md) if you have it. It is called with the options set in E2FSADM\_RESIZE\_OPTS, the block device name, and the number of ext2 filesystem blocks.

- **E2FSADM\_RESIZE\_OPTS**

  Options for the EXT2\_RESIZE\_CMD. Defaults to nothing. If you are using [resize2fs(8)](/resize2fs/8.md), you will want to set this to -p.
