# diald-deb(7)

diald information for Debian/GNU Linux

## NAME

diald-deb - diald information for Debian/GNU Linux

## DESCRIPTION

This manual page tries to be a guide to the configuration of Debian/GNU Linux [**diald**(8)](/diald/8.md).

Users have reported that using the combination of [**diald**(8)](/diald/8.md) and [**pppd**(8)](/pppd/8.md) on */dev/cua?* devices causes problems. Use a */dev/ttyS?* for **diald**. Let me repeat this: the man page [**diald**(8)](/diald/8.md) shows several examples with */dev/cua1*. THESE WILL NOT WORK (pppd will complain about the device being busy). Use */dev/ttyS?* devices instead. Read */usr/doc/diald/debian.device* for a possible explanation.

You can **gunzip** */usr/doc/diald/examples/diald.options.gz* into */etc/diald/diald.options*. Edit its contents to match your set up. Read the [**diald**(8)](/diald/8.md) man page and */usr/doc/diald/faq.txt.gz,* for the complete list of available options. The file provided with the distribution is just an example.

After, and only after, you have completed the steps above will [**diald**(8)](/diald/8.md) have a chance to work correctly. Now either reboot, or start [**diald**(8)](/diald/8.md) by hand by excecuting typing */etc/init.d/diald stop* followed by */etc/init.d/diald start* for which you need superuser priviledges.

If anything goes wrong keep in mind that if you remove */etc/diald/diald.options* and reboot, [**diald**(8)](/diald/8.md) will not be activated. This should allow you to go back to your original (presumably working) configuration and start again.

## DIALD MONITOR

Debian's diald comes with a monitor program [**dctrl**(1)](/dctrl/1.md) that allows one to visually examine the status of the link. This program requires *tk* to work. Also, you must have enabled the fifo option in *diald.options*. The default fifo is */var/run/diald.fifo* which is created and removed on the fly by */etc/init.d/diald.* Changing the default in */etc/diald/diald.options* is not a problem, the fifo location is parsed on the fly by **/etc/init.d/diald** and **dctrl.** Only root and group dialout can read and write to it. If you want to allow other users to manipulate the link, you will have to change the access permissions.

## BUGS AND LIMITATIONS

This page should be complemented by a proper installation script.
