NAME
diald-deb - diald information for Debian/GNU Linux
DESCRIPTION
This manual page tries to be a guide to the configuration of Debian/GNU Linux diald
IMPORTANT Users have reported that using the diald/pppd combination on /dev/cua? devices causes problems. Use a /dev/ttyS? for diald. Let me repeat this: the man page diald(8) shows several examples with /dev/cua1. THESE WILL NOT WORK (pppd will complain about the device being busy). Use /dev/ttyS? devices instead. Read /usr/doc/diald/debian.device for a possible explanation.
Check the script /etc/init.d/diald. The installation script should have configured the modem port correctly. Verify that the assignment DEV=/dev/... is indeed correct for your installation. NOTE: This script will activate diald at boot time _only_ if the file /etc/diald/diald.options exists (read below).
Copy /usr/doc/diald/diald.options to /etc/diald/diald.options. Edit its contents to match your set up. Read the diald(8) man page, and the FAQ in /usr/doc/diald for the complete list of available options. The file provided with the distribution is the one used by the maintainer. His set up is: PPP link, fixed IP.
After, and only after, you have completed the steps above will diald have a chance to work correctly. Now either reboot, or start diald by hand by typing `/etc/init.d/diald stop' followed by `/etc/init.d/diald start'.
If anything goes wrong keep in mind that if you remove /etc/diald/diald.options and reboot, diald will not be activated. This should allow you to go back to your original (presumably working ;) configuration and start again.
DIALD MONITOR
Debian's diald comes with a monitor program ( dctrl ) that allows one to visually examine the status of the link. This program requires tk to work. Also, you must have enabled the fifo option in diald.options. The default fifo is /var/lib/diald/diald.fifo. This was created by the installation script and only root can write to it. If you want to allow other users to manipulate the link, you will have to change the access permissions.

BUGS AND LIMITATIONS
The installation script should be able to determine reliably whether SLIP devices are available, either in the kernel or as a module.
This page should be complemented by a proper installation script.
