## NAME

drop database — destroy an existing database

## SYNOPSIS

```
drop database dbname
```

## DESCRIPTION

**Drop database** removes the catalog entries for an existing database and deletes the directory containing the data.  It can only be executed by the database administrator (see *createdb*(l) for details).
