# analyze\_coverage(1)

interprets Modula-3 coverage analysis data

## Name

analyze\_coverage - interprets Modula-3 coverage analysis data

## Syntax

**analyze\_coverage** \[-command\]\*

## Description

[**analyze\_coverage**(1)](/analyze_coverage/1.md) is a tool to manipulate and interpret Modula-3 coverage analysis data.

When a Modula-3 program is compiled with the -Z option, statistics are collected each time the program runs; [analyze\_coverage(1)](/analyze_coverage/1.md) lets the user manipulate this collected data, where the basic information is the number of times each line of source code and each procedure has been executed.

Statistics that are collected are concatened to the database file; its name is the value of the environment variable COVERAGE\_DATABASE if defined, "coverage.out" otherwise. This file will grow with each execution; from time to time you may want to compact it by using the -w option (see below).

[analyze\_coverage(1)](/analyze_coverage/1.md) maintains an internal coverage database and the commands specify how to use and manipulate this database. Initially, the database is empty. The commands are:

- r files

files are coverage files, as produced by the execution of a program. These files are read, and their contents are added to that of the database.

- w files

this outputs the current content of the database in each of files. If you plan to use coverage data produced by many executions in more than one instance of this program it is efficient to output the consolidated database during the first run and to use it as the input file in subsequent analyzis.

- l files

files are source files, and line count data is displayed for those files.

- L

displays line count data for the files for which some data is present in the current database.

- p files

files are source files, and procedure count data is displayed for those files.

- P

displays procedure count data for the files for which some data is present in the current database.

- S paths

extend the search path for source files with paths. Initially, the search path is value of the environment variable COVERAGE\_PATH if defined, "." otherwise. When source files are mentionned (as arguments of the l and p commands), only the basename is used.

- o file

  send subsequent output to file.

- v

  turn verbose mode on.

- q

  quit.

- e file

take the commands from file. When done, continue from here.

- \<empty\>

take the commands from the standard input. Each command (with its arguments) must be on a line by itself.

If no 'r' command appears before one of the 'w', 'l', 'L', 'p', or 'P' commands, the default coverage file is read before that command is executed. The name of the default coverage file is the value of the environment variable COVERAGE\_DATABASE is defined, "coverage.out" otherwise.
