NAME
NewsCache - Cache for Network News Transport Protocol
SYNOPSIS
NewsCache [ -i ] [ -o ] [ config-file ]
DESCRIPTION
NewsCache reads NNTP requests from news clients and answers them directly, if the request can be fulfilled from the cached data. Otherwise, NewsCache contacts its news server to answer the client's request.
If config-file is specified read the configuration will be read from this file instead of the default configuration file.
OPTIONS
- -i
-
Read commands from stdin instead of binding to CachePort and waiting for connections. This options is useful if NewsCache should be started from inetd instead of starting it as standalone server. However, this can also be configured in the configuration-file.
- -o
-
Force offline mode. Never contact the news server. This option can be useful if you are running diald and do not want that NewsCache establishes a connection to its news server, whenever the cached data times out.
NOTES
If NewsCache is started as standalone server it has to be started as root if CachePort is set to a port below 1024. However, if Username and Groupname is set in the configuration file, NewsCache drops all privileges as soon as it has bound to CachePort.
If NewsCache operates in offline-mode all articles queued for submission will be stored in SPOOLDIR/.outgoing/*
Spool directory must not be located on an NFS mounted volume. NewsCache uses file-locking, which is not supported over NFS.
